Harkness takes an intellectual take on paranormal romance, making the idea of witches, vampires and daemons seem almost probable. She fills the story with science, history and mythological facts that makes a reader feel as if you're secretly learning while being immersed in a paranormal forbidden love affair.
The story centres around Diana and Matthew. Diana being a witch and Matthew being a vampire, the paranormal version of Romeo and Juliet. A love affair forbidden by supernatural law.
Overall the story fills all the conventions of a paranormal romance novel. We have a strong and smart heroine and a protective, sexy and brooding hero with plenty of colourful characters to build the world of witches, vampires and Daemons around, but what I felt was seriously lacking in this book was humor.
I feel the amount of intellectual content throughout the story slowed down the pass and would have carried the story better if there was more humour for the reader to enjoy. I'm a huge fan of a man with a sense of humour and Matthew was seriously lacking in that department.
Romance should always be surrounded by laughter.
