The Immortal Crown - An Age of X Novel

We are back in the dystopian world of the RUNA. *spoliers*
There is so much happening in this next installment that I don't know where to begin. Mae and Justin are still denying their feelings, Mae because she's embarrassed and stubborn as Justin rejected her and Justin because he doesn't want to become a priest for the god Odin. Drama.
The main plot point throughout this novel is 'Arcadia' - Arcadia is set just outside the RUNA and is controlled by religion. Woman are seen as second class and evil so they are made to do housework like they still live in the days of no electrics or plumbing as 'hard work beats out the evil'. Idiots.
Senator Darling asks Mae and Justin to come with him to Arcadia on a peace mission so he can raise his profile. Justin refuses out right but Mae convinces him to go as she is shown a vision of her missing niece there from the god Freya, who's knife she now has.
Arcadia is pretty much a backwards town of ignorant men following a controlling god. But the trip isn't all bad. Justin meets with the Grand Deciple and figures out his plans to over take the RUNA and Mae finds her niece in a salon full of stolen children from the RUNA, where they sell girls off once they hit puberty. Like I said backwards town.
It all ends well happy days, the senator looks like he saved the RUNA from terrorists and saved all the young girls rejoining them with their family's.
BUT
this is where the happy ends I'm afraid. Throughout all this the gods have been playing games and the war of the elect has started. Both Mae and Justin are elect- powerful humans who can connect with gods. It all goes down hill when Justin finally admits his undying love to Mae and explains in the process why he can't sleep with her. Mae runs off upset, not understanding why he's still denying them. Later on Justin turns up at her place in a lustful rage and they finally have sex again - strange? My thoughts exactly, considering only a couple pages back he was determined not to. When Mae starts talking with 'Justin' she realises it's not him, but before she can question who he is he runs off.
The real Justin comes straight over once he hears what happend and takes Mae to  hospital for a rape kit but they are unable to find the culprits DNA in file. While Justin sleeps Mae makes the decision to leave him so he doesn't have to become a priest for Odin (although he unknowingly already has when he poured out his heart to her). Mae is sent to the front lines as she doesn't want anything to do with Freya anymore as she believes she allowed her to be raped. While there the god Loki approaches her asking her to becomes his Valkyrie and it looks like she might! Now all I know about Loki is from watching Thor and he doesn't come across as a decent god in that 😕.
Now the real crazy happens at the end. We find out who rapped her - Rufus the bodyguard hired to watch Tessa isn't who we think  he is. O no. He's actually an elect with the power to shape shift and guess who he ends up being ... PORFIRIO!!! Mae's ex who tried to rape her in the the first book! Who is also supposed to be dead!
I can not explain my excitement for the next book! If an author doesn't shock her readers she isn't doing her job! Love Richelle Mead!
I give this 4 1/2 * stars!!!
